5 Tips For Summer-Ready Skin

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

Sun's out! Time to switch up your skincare routine ready for summer, says founder of {SIMPLE as that}, Danielle Glover.

As the seasons change and we hit summer in the Southern Hemisphere, it's time to change up your skincare routine and get your skin summer ready. But where to start?

Here are my five tips for getting the most out of your skin to ensure you get that dewy, glowing complexion all summer long.

1. Exfoliate for radiance

Dead cells sit on the surface of your skin making it look dull, rough and dry. By exfoliating, you are removing these dead cells, allowing your more radiant, healthier summer skin to shine through. Exfoliating also allows skin cells to regenerate more quickly and for your moisturiser and serums to penetrate deeper, making them more effective. Find yourself a natural exfoliant to gently scrub your face with, which contains natural skin-boosting ingredients so you can give your skin a dose of antioxidants while you're at it. It's best to exfoliate at least once a week, ideally twice.

2. Keep it clean

During the summer months, your body is introduced to many toxins throughout the day – the sand on your beach towel, the chlorine in the pool, the build-up from sunscreen, and sweat in general. So making sure your face is clean and free of impurities is imperative. Your summer skincare routine should include cleansing twice a day, once in the morning to wash off sweat or debris from sleeping and once at night to wash off impurities built up from the day. I love a cleanser which is gentle but powerful so it removes impurities without drying out the skin, while containing antibacterial properties of Tea Tree to deeply cleanse and tighten pores.

3. Use the right moisturiser for the moment

Switch your moisturiser every time the seasons change, so you can be sure you're using the right one for the current climate. Your skin needs less moisture in the summer months so it's best switch to a lightweight moisturiser.

4. Add antioxidants to your diet

Healthy eating is a must all year round, but particularly during sunny summer. Consume lots of fresh seasonal foods, such as pineapples, citrus fruits, berries, nuts and summer vegetables. The essential vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants they contain will boost collagen production, reduce inflammation and protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun.

5. Wear sunscreen

Last, but definitely not least... apply a natural broad spectrum sunscreen. This is possibly the most important part of your summer skincare regime. Not only does sunscreen keep your skin looking younger by blocking out harmful UV rays associated with premature ageing, it also helps to keep your skin tone even by preventing facial brown spots and discolouration. Try and apply it at least a couple of times throughout the day for maximum protection. Look for a sunscreen which is natural, light-weight and non-greasy and SPF 30 or above.

Lastly, don’t forget to make water your best friend. It not only helps you feel fresh, but it also prevents dehydration and will help wash away any built up toxins.
